This is my final project for a production design class I took last year. It is a scale model for William Shakespeare's "The Tempest".
Since the main character Prospero was some sort of sorcerer (among other things), I related his character to Leonardo Da Vinci--a person whose ideas were also considered radical during his time. I also had the idea of executing the magic sequences using Da Vinci's weird machines and contraptions (but that was beyond the scope of the project). Anyway, I incorporated these ideas into the design by using Da Vinci imagery everywhere(including the costumes, although I do not intend to include the sketches here). The photograph features the basic set, with additional drops at the back.
*This model was made as an exercise for design and model-building only--the play was not actually performed.
This is awesome. I love the colors and the movement the scene creates.
I was wondering, would you mind if I featured this in the design section of ~dAZine? I'm looking for some quality design pieces and this is quality
This is very cool, the circular ramps are awsome.
The idea of incorporating DaVinci is very interesting and adds a lot of personality to the set. However, I think the connection between Prospero and DaVinci is vague, and although interesting I think the dimention it would add, would inevitably draw away from the essence of the play.
Nonetheless, I would love to see how this would have been if it was actually put on.
Thank you so much for your comments!
Although I thought it was quite sound at the time I designed this, the DaVinci-Prospero connection does seem quite vague now. There was very little time to really wrap my brain around the play, do in-depth analysis and research, and actually design and construct the model, so I really didn't get to think everything through as thoroughly as I would have liked. And I guess I got a little too excited about how cool it would look with all the DaVinci imagery, so I just kind of ran away with the idea. Anyway, it is what it is, and I'm glad you still liked it. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
Great model
